6061-T6 aluminum is the easiest aluminum to CNC machine due to its excellent machinability, balanced hardness, and forgiving cutting characteristics that work well with standard tooling and parameters.

If you’ve spent any time sourcing machined parts, you’ve probably asked this question: Can you CNC 6061 aluminum?

The short answer is yes — and not only can you machine it, but 6061 aluminum is widely considered the most popular and practical choice for CNC machining across virtually every industry.

Here’s why this alloy dominates the workshop floor — and why it should be on your next RFQ.

What Makes 6061 Aluminum So Special?

6061 is a heat-treatable aluminum alloy in the 6xxx series, alloyed primarily with magnesium and silicon. Its T6 temper (6061-T6) is the most common — it's been solution heat-treated and artificially aged to reach peak strength, with a tensile strength of 310 MPa (45 ksi) and yield strength of 276 MPa (40 ksi).

But strength alone isn't why it's everywhere. What makes 6061 shine is its balanced performance:

  • Excellent machinability — It cuts cleanly, produces good surface finishes, and keeps tool wear low. Rated at about 70% of free-cutting brass, it's a machinist's friend.

  • Great strength-to-weight ratio — About one-third the weight of steel, with plenty of structural capability.

  • Good corrosion resistance — Performs well in outdoor and industrial environments without additional coatings.

  • Excellent anodizing response — Takes clear, black, and colored anodizing beautifully for both protection and aesthetics.

  • Good weldability — Can be TIG or MIG welded with standard equipment, unlike some high-strength aerospace alloys.

Real-World Machining Performance

In practice, 6061 delivers. Studies show that with optimized parameters, you can achieve surface finishes as fine as 0.103 μm Ra, making it suitable for precision applications. Spindle speed is the most influential parameter for surface quality, followed by feed rate and depth of cut.

For production shops, that means shorter cycle times, longer tool life, and consistent quality — all of which translate to lower costs per part.
